Child remembers his best friend killed in a crash

Updated: Mon 12:19 AM, Jun 25, 2012

A small memorial sits on the exact spot where Wellington Abreu and his father, Rick Pojeky, were hit just a short distance from their home, on Saturday. The six-year-old didn't make it.

"It's very sad what happened to him," said Joseph Sowede, Wellington's best friend.

"It was a tragic accident," added Joseph's mother, Joann Land.

Land and her son have lived next to Wellington's family and the pair grew to be more than friends, but rather brothers.

"Wellington was here everyday, he and Joseph would play everyday," said Land, adding, "Wellington was always smiling and he was happy, and nothing ever got him down."

The boys were always playing and creating new games or challenges.

"He was a great friend of mine and he would be very nice to me and would share everything about ourselves," described Joseph.

On Saturday, the family was hit with a bigger challenge after they learned what happened to their little neighbor.

"Joseph had asked yesterday evening if he could go ask Wellington to play. I hadn't told him, yet, because I hadn't figured out how to tell him. After dinner we set him down and we told him we had some really sad news that we had to tell him," recalled Land.

Finding out that he couldn't play with his best friend crushed Joseph, but even at his young age he knows he'll always have those special moments.

"I want him to him to have a great time up there with Jesus," answered Joseph, who later said, "I can't say anything else or else I'll start crying."

"There were a lot of tears last night," echoed his mother.

While their hearts are heavy, they know that Wellington's smile and the games he'd play will never fade from their memory.

Wellington's visitation will be held at 1:30 on Tuesday at Saint Mark Catholic Church, in Richmond. The funeral will follow.
