MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ky (WKYT) - A Kentucky jailer has come up with an unusual way to help families in need this holiday season. The effort involves the cooperation of those who want to visit inmates in the Montgomery County Jail.
The jail has already collected hundreds of toys for children in need this season. The program allows people visiting inmates at the Montgomery County Regional Jail to bring a new toy with them, if they do, they get an extra 15 minutes of visitation with that inmate.
Those toys will be donated to the arms of love toy drive and they'll be given out on December 23 at TK Gymnastics.
Jailer Eric Jones says this program has not only helped children, it's helped the people serving time here at the jail.
"It works out good for the inmates who are having a hard time during the holidays, they get to spend a little extra time with their family and it works out great for us to be back into the community where most times something comes out of the jail is a negative aspect, this is all positive."
For the next three Sundays the jail will also be collecting toys at the Mt. Sterling Walmart. You can also donate toys you can drop them off at the Mount Sterling Dollar General Store, Cheryl's Hallmark.
