Clay County schools to get new security system

MANCHESTER, Ky. (AP) - An eastern Kentucky school system is making safety its top priority.

WYMT-TV reports schools in Clay County will soon get a new security system that includes a magnetic lock, keypad and camera near the front door, and visitors will have to identify themselves and give their reason for visiting before they can enter a building.

School officials say the system was being considered before a mass shooting in December at an elementary school in Connecticut, but has become a priority since then.

Clay County Middle School Principal Steve Burchfield he hopes the system would deter anyone would might want to do harm at schools.

Officials say they hope to have the system in place in at least a few schools by next week.
