FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Coalfield counties, hit hard by a downturn in the mining industry, are continuing to struggle with unemployment.

The Kentucky Office of Employment and Training released monthly unemployment figures on Thursday showing that the counties with the highest jobless rates are concentrated in the state's mountain region where the coal industry is the primary employer.

Leslie County had the highest unemployment at 18 percent. Harlan and Magoffin counties were both above 16 percent. Letcher and Bell counties were over 14 percent.

Statewide, unemployment rates rose in 96 counties, decreased in 14 and stayed the same in 10.

Woodford County recorded the lowest jobless rate at 6.1 percent. Grant County was at 6.2 percent. Fayette and Scott counties were at 6.4 percent while Boone, Daviess and Oldham counties were at 6.5 percent.
