College student, two others injured in deck collapse

RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) - Several people were injured after a deck collapsed during a party this weekend.

The collapse happened at a home on Amberly Way in Richmond.

Three people had to be rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

Kim Albright's son, Michael Phelps, was one of the injured.

"It was described over the phone that he only had a cut over his eyebrow," Albright says. "I didn't sound serious at all."

Albright quickly learned, it was more serious than she first thought. Doctors told her Phelps was bleeding outside of his brain. He also fractured all the bones in his face and seriously injured his knee.

"I would take the pain away from him if I could because he's hurting real bad," Albright says.

Code enforcement officials say 30 to 40 people were on the deck when it gave way.

We're told there wasn't anything wrong with the deck. It simply couldn't handle the weight of that many people.

Phelps is a senior at EKU. Albright is concerned Phelps may not graduate on time because of his injuries. Doctors say it will take about six months for him to recover and his mother says he'll probably miss some classes while he's getting better.
