Heavy snow continues to increase across the region. Snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour are likely this evening and tonight. More than a foot of snow may fall by Thursday morning.
FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - Rates will increase for customers of Big Rivers Electric Corp. after the departure of Century Aluminum smelter in Sebree in western Kentucky from the utility's system but not by as much as the utility requested.
The Kentucky Public Service Commission also agreed to let Big Rivers use reserve funds to fully offset the increases, meaning customers won't realize the increases until next year.
After that, residential customers' monthly bills will increase by about $15 on average.
The PSC's order Friday authorizes Big Rivers to increase revenue by more than $36 million from remaining customers, or about 14 percent. The PSC said the amount is about half what Big Rivers requested.
The PSC also approved pass-through rate increases for the three distribution cooperatives that purchase power from Big Rivers.
