Community holds prayer service for three victims of Hazard shooting

HAZARD, Ky. (WKYT) - A community came together Wednesday night to honor three people killed in a shooting on a college campus.

Twelve-year-old Taylor Cornett died Wednesday afternoon at UK Hospital.

She, along with her father, Jackie Cornett, and her cousin, Caitlin Cornett, were shot Tuesday night in a parking lot at Hazard Community & Technical College.

Police have charged 21-year-old Dalton Stidham with murder in the case. They say he confessed after the shooting.

Police say Stidham and Caitlin Cornett had a child together, and had been involved in a custody dispute.

People of all backgrounds gathered at Petrey Memorial Baptist Church in Hazard Wednesday night for a prayer service honoring the victims.

"It's important for us to come together as a community and give voice to our grief," Petrey Memorial Baptist Church Bill Scott said.

First responders were also honored at the service. Hazard Police Deputy Joseph Engle, whose grandfather was murdered five years ago, says it's important for the victims' families to hold on and have strength.

"I've experienced what they feel and it seems like the end, and like it will never get better," Engle said. "But don't give up. It'll get easier. It will never be the same, but it will get easier."

Engle also said the families should never lose their faith.
