CORBIN, Ky. (WKYT) - Tables and decorations showed the preparations Wednesday for a large gathering at a home in Corbin. Joe Shelton says family, friends and those who knew his nephew, Dirk Shelton, will gather for a celebration of his life. They don't want to dwell on the tragedy that took him from them.
"Dirk, he filled his purpose in life. Sometimes, the only regret we have is that it was cut short," said Shelton.
Shelton, 29, died from a head injury when he fell July 13 at a Washington, D.C. hotel. His family says he served in special operations all over the world.
"We want to hold Dirk up as an example of how you should live your life," said Shelton.
His body will arrive at Blue Grass Airport about 9 p.m. Wednesday. Once in Corbin, police and emergency personnel plan to escort him through town.
"Our community has been wonderful. Outpouring of support is wonderful," said Shelton.
Shelton was an organ donor. Relatives say his organs will save the lives of eight people.
