There have been more signs the town of West Liberty is on the road to recovery.

Government officials on the federal, state and local levels traveled to the Morgan County town today to celebrate another milestone, nearly six months after a devastating EF-3 tornado tore the town to pieces.

Parents, students and staff welcomed eastern Kentucky's favorite congressman to the library of West Liberty Elementary School, also known as the “miracle on the hill,” for the efforts done over the summer to transform the factory into a temporary school building.

Congressman Hal Rogers visited students, staff and parents at the "new" West Liberty Elementary School, where he came bearing gifts.

“I came to donate to this school, this so called “miracle on the hill,” said Rogers, who added that “their books were destroyed, most of them in the tornado.”

Rogers contacted officials at the Library of Congress 300 books to donate to the school’s library for the students.

Rogers said he wanted to help the people of Morgan County and West Liberty in their times of trying to rebuild because he has seen what they have done so far and he wants to continue it.

“I felt so good about having a small part in the recovery of Morgan County but I am so pleased and I am so thrilled and honored to be a part of this mountain spirit that is so evident in Morgan County,” said Rogers.

School officials said they are thankful.

“We are just very appreciative that he took the time think of us and the Library of Congress was willing to donate the books to give to our school,” said Principal Vickie Oldfield.

“What we have seen from this, is that our students, our adults, our community at large, we are very resilient,” said Superintendent Deatrah Barnett.

Barnett said they will continue to bounce back and the building process is coming along with the new school building. She said they do not have an exact date of when the new school will be open.
