WOLFE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Police say black ice is to blame for a deadly crash in Wolfe County.

It happened around 12:00 p.m. Friday in the eastbound lane of the Mountain Parkway, near mile marker 46.

According to Kentucky State Police the driver of a Black Crown Victoria - heading westbound on the Parkway lost control when the roadway merged into one-lane in each direction.

"When he did that, he slammed on his brakes and the black ice caused the car to slide into the oncoming lane - colliding with a Chevy Lumina," said Master Trooper Joe Veeneman. "Then he hit the guardrail on the eastbound side, before hitting head-on with a Toyota Camry."

The drivers sister, Victoria Stommel, 51, who was sitting in the back right - died instantly according to investigators.

Wearing a seat-belt, police believe the sheer force of the collision likely killed the woman.

"It's truly a tragic accident and one the victim's sister is going to have to live with the rest of his life," said Trooper Veeneman.

Everyone else involved in the crash, including the woman's son and husband escaped injury.

At this time KSP tells WKYT no charges are expected.
