Child killed in Rowan County house fire

CLEARFIELD, Ky. (WKYT) - An early morning house fire has claimed the life of a young Rowan County boy.

The fire broke out around 8:30 a.m. Thursday in Clearfield, just outside Morehead.

It was a neighbor who helped the family after she heard someone shouting.

"The little girls was screaming, Lottie was screaming, and I got up and ran to the back door and let them in," said Lois Black.

Lottie Pennington and her three daughters came into Black's house. They had escaped their burning home but suffered serious injuries.

"They were all burned, their hands," Black said.

Black says while they tended to the girls burns Lottie's husband, James Pennington, tried to get to their young son who was still in the house, but the flames were too intense.

Lottie, James and the three girls were taken away in ambulances. James is still listed in critical condition at UK Hospital.

Firefighters say they found the boy's body just before 11 a.m.

Black says Lottie Pennington told her the fire started near a kerosene heater.

Because someone died in the fire Kentucky State Police arson investigators are working to find the exact cause.

A fund for the family has been set up at Whitaker Bank in Morehead.
