Coroner: man suffocates in mud collapse

Updated: Fri 7:58 PM, Jun 01, 2012

An effort to rescue a man buried in a trench collapse has come to a tragic end.

Late Thursday evening, WKYT confirmed 41-year-old Jay Scott Ballard of Georgetown died while working on Old Oxford Road, off Newtown Pike in Scott County.

Crews had to temporarily suspend all recovery efforts, because of the storms.

Scott County Coroner John Goble tells WKYT Jay Ballard died Thursday evening from suffocation. He says Ballard was trying to fix a water line break beside a stock pond, when a four foot high wall of the pond collapsed in on him. The coroner says Ballard was with his girlfriend at the time, who tried rescuing him from the mud, but she was unsuccessful. Fire crews from both Georgetown and Scott County started the recovery process again around 9:45 p.m.

Andy Gaunce is in disbelief that this could happen to his friend, "It's just a tragedy that this happened to him. It was just a pure mistake."

Gaunce describes Ballard as hard working and says he was a man that would do anything for anyone,"All you had to do is call on him. The word is devastation and he will be greatly missed."

Ballard's funeral will be Tuesday at the Tucker, Yocum & Wilson funeral home in Georgetown.
