Lexington home damaged by fire

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Several crews were called to battle a house fire that damaged a Lexington home.

The fire started around 12:30 early Friday morning on Twelfth Street, between North Broadway and North Limestone. Neighbors say they saw smoke and flames coming from the home.

One witness said he was prepared to run into the home, when a man came out and said his mother was still inside. Both the mother and her son got out of the home without injury. The home was heavily damaged.

"By the time I saw some neighbors standing outside at their door down there, I asked if their house was on fire. They said well we don't know but we're calling the cops. I said well, call the fire department too," said bystander Steve Johnson.

He continued, "I hadn't seen a fire like this in a long time. I mean in person. You see this kind of stuff on tv, but close to home like this, you rarely ever see it."

At one time, more than a dozen units were on scene. The fire department says the home did have working smoke detectors. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
