Crews ready for snow in southern Kentucky

SOMERSET, Ky. (WKYT/WYMT) - Kentucky transportation officials say they are usually always ready for a snow event in late fall, but they say they’re having a hard time believing they’re going to be working in some kind of winter weather…when that season is still about two months out.

Crews are getting ready for winter’s worst….even though it’s only the middle of autumn.

“All of our trucks have been calibrated and inspected. All of our domes are loaded with salt. Calcium and brine are loaded to max capacity,” said Amber Hale, spokesperson for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s district office in Somerset.

Usually crews in southern Kentucky do not respond to snow events untilat least December, but all their trucks are geared up with shovels, crews are on stand-by, and all the domes are full of salt.

“We have approximately 19,000 tons of salt, in-place through the 10 counties. Each dome holds about 5,000 tons of salt,” Hale said.

The transportation office that is based in Somerset actually covers a 10 county area with crews ready to treat, plow or salt about 4,800 miles of state highway in those 10 counties.
