Crimestoppers adds to reward for information in officer shooting

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. (WKYT)- It's been nearly three months to the day since a shooting scene unfolded right off Maple Leaf Drive in Nicholasville. Officer John Rainey was shot in the back just moments after he'd parked his car to investigate a suspicious man he'd seen walking down the street in dark clothes.

"He had a gut instinct that something wasn't right about this guy in a hoodie,"explained Officer Kevin Grimes of the Nicholasville Police Department, as he pointed out where the officer was walking. "He saw the individual enter into the brush line and he was shot in the back.
"
Police say a bullet proof vest likely saved Rainey's life. They believe the person who attempted to take it knows the area well.

"Think they would have to," Grimes said. "the brush is thick and there's a fence right there; you'd have to know where the area comes out to in order to get away so quickly."

As police continue to investigate this crime, there is now a large reward for information leading to an arrest in this case. 14-thousand dollars has been raised by members of the general public and now Crimestoppers is offering an additional thousand.

"We hope somebody knows what happened and that they'll give us a call and say 'Hey, this is the individual who did it,'" Grimes said. "This is a person who--if he was able to shoot an officer without thinking twice about it, think what else they've done or what they're capable of doing."

If you have a tip for police, call Crimestoppers at 859-253-2020. It is a free call and it is anonymous. You could be eligible for the 15-thousand dollar cash reward.
