Deadly crash ties up traffic on I-64 for hours

Updated: Sat 8:23 PM, Jul 21, 2012

A man is dead after, police say, a car and a semi hit his moped.

The crash happened just before 4 a.m. in the eastbound lanes of I-64, near mile marker 88.

Lexington Police say Kevin Kintigos was riding the moped in the center lane when a Mitsubishi Eclipse hit him. He was then hit by the semi.

Police tell WKYT the semi driver did not stop and they do not know if the driver is aware they hit someone.

Kintigos was pronounced dead at the scene.

I-64 was shut down at Haley Pike until after 10:00 a.m. Traffic was diverted onto Winchester Road during the closure.

It's not known if alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.

In Kentucky mopeds are not allowed on major highways like I-64.
