LAUREL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Investigators say a fight between an uncle and his nephew ended with one of them dead and another in jail.
The Laurel County Sheriff's Office says Gary Collier of Laurel County shot and killed his nephew Wednesday afternoon at a home 10 miles outside of London.
He’s now charged with murder.
Neighbors living along Raccoon Creek Road describe the area where the shooting happened as safe and peaceful. "It's usually quiet. Nothing really happens on this creek.”
That is, until Wednesday when the single crack of a gunshot slashed through the usual silence.
"I saw two sheriffs with their lights on and sirens. Then I saw an ambulance," said Janet Messer, who lives down the road.
Deputies were called out to residence of 61-year-old Gary Collier where they say Collier had shot and killed his own nephew, 44-year-old Stephen Sturgill, after a fight took place between the two.
“It blew my mind, freaked me out, I didn’t have any clue something like that was going to happen,” Messer explained.
Neighbors say the Collier family has lived up that road for more than 15 years and has pretty much kept to themselves
"Something like that happened and it’s just terrible."
We're told Collier shot Sturgill once in the chest with a 12 gauge shotgun and he was pronounced dead on the scene.
Now, Collier is facing murder charges in connection with his nephew's death.
We reached out to the Collier family to see if they would like to comment on Wednesday's incident but they declined.
