Demolition work underway at vacant apartment complex

Updated: Wed 12:59 PM, Nov 07, 2012

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - It's considered one of the largest eyesores in Lexington, but that's about to change.

Crews have started demolishing the Pennington Place apartments located near Richmond Road and New Circle.

The apartments have sat vacant for years and fell into disrepair. In January, a Florida based company bought the property.

Work to demolish the buildings began in mid-October.

The construction company has already demolished seven buildings on the property and there are plans to take down five more.

As for the others on site, they are planning to restore those and rent them out in the future.

For people who have lived in this neighborhood for decades, it's a relief to see something being done with the empty buildings.

"In the long run, it should pay off pretty good," said Vicky Carter. "As long as they put it back. Then they're going to be apartments then they'll probably put the landscaping back."

The company that owns the property has security personnel on site to make sure no one can interfere with progress.
