RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) - Flags have been placed at half staff at the State Law Enforcement Memorial at Eastern Kentucky University in honor of Marion County Sheriff's Deputy Anthony Rakes.

Deputy Rakes was killed in the line of duty on Wednesday morning. Dewayne Shipp is accused of shooting him during a traffic stop.

Word of Deputy Rakes' death spread quickly to the memorial at Richmond. The memorial has 501 names on it.

The memorial is a reminder of the sacrifice many men and women have made while serving the people of Kentucky.

Deputy Rakes is the third member of law enforcement killed in the line of duty this year. Pike County Deputy Sheriff James Thacker died in a crash in January.

Hodgenville Police Officer Mark Taulbee died in September when he crashed during a chase.

The executive director of the Kentucky Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation says all officers are impacted every time a name is added to this memorial.

"It's a tragic day, anytime something like this occurs, no matter what part of the country, particularly when it's local and affects people that you're familiar with," says executive director Horace Johnston.

More names will be added to the memorial during a ceremony next May. The families of all thee men will be invited to that event.
