Ben Brown, a Navy veteran and Team River Runner chairman, goes out and kayaks a couple times a month with his organization.
"For me, it's being in situations and environments that you never thought were possible after your injury," says Brown, "I would have never thought being in a wheelchair I would be able to get out on the Kentucky River and paddle downstream."
In 2002, Brown got in a motorcycle wreck, and suffered from a spinal cord injury. He did his wheelchair rehabilitation at Cardinal Hill. And Wednesday, he invited some patients much like himself to find help and hope on the water.
"Team River Runners encompasses the ability to kayak for anybody no matter their disability," he says, "especially when you're in a kayak. Everybody's just kinda on the same level. The same playing field. There's been times where I've come off the water and there'll be people kinda standing around and they had no idea that my wheelchair, that's for me."
