Service dog would help diabetic girl

Updated: Mon 10:32 AM, Feb 25, 2013

PULASKI COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT/WYMT) - Haylee Whitis is in many years like a typical 8 year old. She likes Disney movies and basketball.

But 5 times a day she has take insulin shots...all because of juvenile diabetes.

"She just got sick one day. Out of the blue," said Donnie Whitis, Haylee's father.

She can slip into a coma in the middle of the night.

"Anytime your sugar drops too low...or goes too high, it affects the organs in your body," he said.

They need a service dog to alert them when her levels drop.

"I get up at 2 every morning. What if my alarm doesn't go off..what if she drops at another time?" said Dana Whitis, her mother.

The problem is that service dogs cost $ 25,000. So the community has responded with fund drives, raffles...even her classmates are helping out.

"So in the morning, students are selling these bracelets for $2, it says 'until there's a cure there is a dog,'" said Haylee's first grade teacher at Pulaski Elementary.

The Whitis hope to have the dog by this fall.

The community has several benefits scheduled for March and April to help the Whitis family in their fund drive efforts.
