WKYT viewers help save dogs' lives
They were going to have to be put down, to make way for a remodeling project--dozens of dogs--who WKYT viewers helped saved.
Since our story aired Monday night about the animals in the Rockcastle County Shelter, living on borrowed time, the director says people have come forward to give the dogs a new home.
The shelter canceled the euthanizations they were planning for Wednesday. Officials say they had such great response from adopters, it's no longer needed.
Phones are ringing non-stop at the Rockcastle County Animal Shelter.
"I've got a lot of people committed to come, that say that they're coming and are on their way to get animals," says shelter director David Carpenter.
"Yesterday evening after the news got out, we adopted out about 18 dogs in just a couple of hours, which was outstanding," Carpenter says.
The shelter reaches capacity about every six weeks, and dogs are put down. Shelter officials thought they were going to have to euthanize several animals Wednesday due in part to a remodeling project, but say fortunately, those plans changed.
"The euthanization has been canceled," Carpenter says, "We've had such an overwhelming response, and moved so many dogs out, that we've canceled the euthanization. We're not pressed for space anymore."
Shelter workers say the decade-old cages are rusted and weak, and it's become a safety issue.
"Therefore, we need to tear the old kennels out, and put new ones in," Carpenter says.
He says even though dozens of dogs found a home in less than a day, the shelter doesn't want to see any animal left behind.
"Hopefully the news that's going out right now; we have dogs that need homes--we have good dogs that need homes. We want to see them moved out," Carpenter says.
Because officials at the Rockcastle County Animal Shelter badly want the dogs to find homes, the adoption fee is waived and will be for the rest of the week.
