Domestic violence shelter gives public peek at farm

An organization dedicated to ending intimate partner abuse gave the public a peek into a unique aspect of their private shelter Friday night.

The Bluegrass Domestic Violence Program's shelter in Lexington showed off their expanded farm Friday evening. Shelter residents help grow produce and flowers on the property. Many of the items are sold in downtown Lexington each week.

"In addition to the normal services that you would provide in a domestic violence shelter, they really are trying to help the women who come here turn their lives around and I think that's great," explained Congressman Ben Chandler, who attended Friday's open house.

Shelter supporters were treated to tours of the farm. BDVP serves 17 Central Kentucky counties.
