Donations pour in to animal shelter

All day long, donations have been flooding into the Henry/Trimble County Animal Shelter.

This is where over 100 of the dogs from a Henry County farm were taken after a raid. Shelter officials say the outpouring of support from the community has been overwhelming.

"We've had so many volunteers that we're very thankful for. The community has really pulled through. The donations, the volunteers have been great," says Chad Zimmerman.

Joey Griffith brought in 500 pounds of dog food.

"Went out this morning and got a few donations from some friends of mine. Just trying to get them some dog food and I wish everybody else would do the same," he says.

While lots of people came to drop off donations, others came to take animals home as foster pets.

"I looked straight at my wife and said lets go get us some dogs and take care of them today," says Tony Fisher.

The animals can't be adopted until the case is finished, but they can stay with foster families.

"We have a few cats that are rescues and we're hoping we can bring these back too," says Fisher.

Shelter officials say 30-40 percent of the dogs they took in over the past couple of days have gone to foster homes. They were expecting to take in another 31 dogs today. Dan Flienkfelt, director of the animal shelter, says he's never worked a case quite like this.

"I've worked cruelty cases in the past where it was hoarding with horses, but nothing to this extent. This is probably one of the worst cases I've seen," he says.

So far, one woman who lived on the farm has been found and cited for 11 counts of animal cruelty. A husband and wife who also lived there haven't been found.

Donations to the animal shelter should be sent to 4667 North Main Street Eminence, KY 40019.
