Double murder suspect indicted in Fleming County

FLEMINGSBURG, Ky (WKYT) - With the help of an interpreter Judge Stockton Wood told 27-year-old Mariano Arias that an indictment had been returned against him.

A Fleming County grand jury found enough evidence to charge Arias with two counts of murder. Who the victims were, is still unknown.

"The Commonwealth does not have specifics about the date that these deaths of two people occurred, nor are they confident of the names of the two people who were killed," Judge Wood said during the hearing.

Two sets of human remains were found in Fleming County in April. The county coroner told WKYT the remains had been there for months. They were discovered when a man cleaning his property found a skull, prompting a search of the area. The Fleming County sheriff said it's possible the victims were migrant workers, like Arias.

Arias, a citizen of Mexico, was arrested in August by Kentucky State Police. While the victims are unidentified prosecutors believe they have enough evidence to move forward with the case.

"They believe that you either caused the deaths of these two people or acted with other people to bring about the deaths of these two people," the judge said.

Judge Wood told Arias that if convicted he faced penalties ranging from 20 to 50 years in prison to the death penalty.
