Double murder suspect pleads guilty, avoids death penalty

RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) - A double murder suspect in Madison County avoided a possible death sentence when he entered a guilty plea.

During a court hearing Friday afternoon in Richmond, John Payne admitted he shot and killed his mother, Cornelia Mullins and his girlfriend, Meredith King at his Richmond home in December 2010.

Earlier this month, prosecutors said they would seek the death penalty against Payne. As part of his plea deal, Payne is expected to receive life in prison.

His formal sentencing is March 20.
