RICHMOND, Ky. (WKYT) - Police say a man in a stolen car crashed while trying to get away from them.
It happened on Lexington Road in Richmond at the bridge over I-75 Tuesday night.
Richmond Police say they were first called to Walmart after a shoplifter fled from the security guard there. The store was able to provide a partial license plate number. When that number police ran that number it came back to a car that was stolen from Ohio.
When an officer spotted the vehicle they tried to stop it, but they say the driver, 25-year-old Elijah Rono, took off.
They chased the car along Main Street, but they say Rono pulled away, hitting at least two other cars in the process.
"He was far enough ahead of the officers that he dropped two subjects off at the bank near Tates Creek," said Major Steve Gregg with Richmond Police.
However, things soon turned tricky for police and another driver when Rono turned onto a four lane road, going the wrong direction.
"They lost him a couple of times. He was quite a bit ahead of them, then he went in the left lane by the interstate and hit a truck coming off the off ramp," said Gregg.
Rono had to be cut out of the car. He was taken to UK Hospital where he was last listed in serious condition. The other driver wasn't injured.
Police say they know the identity of one of the people Rono dropped off and they're actively looking for him.
Rono faces multiple charges including evading police, leaving the scene of an accident, reckless driving, and receiving stolen property.
