LAWRENCEBURG, Ky. (WKYT) - It was a heart-pounding moment of fear on the road.
"At the time it was snowing very hard and my windshield wipers stopped working. I didn't have much embankment to pull over to and there were cars coming by and I was worried that they wouldn't be able to see me," said Teresa Cooper.
She was stranded on the Bluegrass Parkway in Anderson County during a snow storm earlier this week when she called 911.
"I could hear him but he couldn't hear me," she said.
Even though there was patchy cell service, Todd Sparrow, the 911 operator, says they were able to find her with the help of the Smart911 program.
"We started to ping for a location for that phone and then got a location that she was on the Bluegrass Parkway. We narrowed it down between a couple of mile markers," he said.
Sparrow says they were able to send help as well as text messages to Cooper because she signed up for the free program a year ago.

Sparrow says the few minutes it takes to sign up can mean the difference between life and death.
