E. coli source in Ohio can't be identified

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - Health officials say they can't identify the source of an E. coli outbreak that left one man dead and sickened 79 after a picnic last month in southwest Ohio.

The outbreak began with people who ate at a July 3 customer appreciation picnic for a lawn care business in Germantown, about 15 miles southwest of Dayton.

The Dayton Daily News (http://bit.ly/NqPQzw ) reports Montgomery County health officials say several factors hampered their investigation. The first illnesses from the bacteria weren't reported until days after the picnic when there was no leftover food to test. Officials say there was no way to determine conditions and temperatures of food preparation and handling coming from multiple sources.

Investigators say they interviewed 117 people but could not conclusively link any food item to the outbreak.
