RICHMOND, Ky. - An Eastern Kentucky University faculty member recently finished sixth in her category in an international fencing competition in Varna, Bulgaria.
Dr. Marcia Pierce, associate professor of biological sciences and faculty adviser for the University's Fencing Club, represented the U.S. on the 50-59 Veteran Women's Epee Team in the 17th annual World Veteran Fencing Championships. One of her victims was Corinn Aubilly, of France, last year's gold medalist in the same event. Pierce edged Aubilly in overtime before falling in the quarterfinals.
Pierce qualified through her third-place finishes at the Milwaukee North American Cup Tournament and the Reno NAC.
Currently ranked second in the U.S. in the Veteran 50-59 category, Pierce plans to continue competing "as long as my body holds up. We had a bronze medalist from Louisville who fenced sabre in Bulgaria at the ripe old age of 75."
