EKU to appeal open records case involving former arts director

RICHMOND, Ky. (AP) - Eastern Kentucky University is appealing a state attorney general's decision saying it must release documents about the departure this year of the school's arts center director.

The university said Monday it would comply with the decision but the Lexington Herald-Leader says Eastern said in a statement that after further review and urging by the attorney for former Center for the Arts director Deb Hoskins, it will appeal.

University officials tried to fire Hoskins in June, a week before she announced her resignation to the center's board. The Herald-Leader requested documents pertaining to the issue, and EKU provided some but denied others, citing a confidentiality agreement.

Herald-Leader attorney Kif Skidmore said a confidentiality agreement doesn't permit public employees and agencies to circumvent the Open Records Act.
