Eastern Ky. health department not making payments

HARLAN, Ky. (AP) - The director of an eastern Kentucky health department says the agency has a $2 million shortfall and hasn't been able to make retirement fund payments in two months.

Lynnett Renner runs the Cumberland Valley District Health Department. Renner told WYMT-TV in Hazard that state and federal funding cutbacks along with Managed Care Organizations not making their payments caused the deficit.

A spokeswoman for the Attorney General's office confirms they have received at least one complaint, but could confirm or deny if there is a criminal investigation.

Several Harlan County Health Department employees told the station money has been taken from their checks, but not put into the fund.

Renner says she hopes to resume payments in March.
