Education center now open at state Capitol

Posted: Mon 6:32 AM, Feb 11, 2013

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) - More than 60,000 students who arrive at the Capitol on school buses each year now have a new Education Center to visit.

First Lady Jane Beshear said the building was formerly a heating and cooling facility that has been turned into a learning center where visitors also can eat lunch and relax.

The center, adjacent to the Capitol, was designed with energy efficiency in mind. Beshear said the building is insulated with recycled denim and features a viewing platform on the roof with solar panels, a wind turbine and a rooftop garden.

"Eco-screens" inside the Center display how much energy the facility is using in real time and how much energy the building's solar panels are creating.

Funding came from a combination of sources, including $250,000 from Duke Energy.
