Education officials meet to restore funding to Kentucky schools

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - It's the start of an effort to get more money for your child's school.

Thursday afternoon, a group of education organizers is meeting to plan its campaign for better school funding. The goal is to restore funding levels in schools to where they were in 2008.

Organizers of this conference say education funding fell after the recession and has remained at those levels. They say because of that some school districts could be facing bankruptcy in the next 12-18 months.

Education leaders from across the Commonwealth gathered for the summit entitled, "Our Kids Can't Wait: Expectations Up, Resources Down".

They say lawmakers have created more pressure for students to succeed, but without more money, it's getting harder and harder to meet those standards.

In fact, they say Education Week recently have Kentucky a failing grade in funding. Dr. Terry Holliday, Kentucky's Education Commissioner, says teachers haven't gotten money to buy new learning materials for their students since about 2006. Holliday said several districts are staring down bankruptcy that could come in the next year and a half if something doesn't change.

"Ladies and gentleman of the General Assembly, if you don't reinvest in education, the nosedive will happen quicker than the rise happened," Holliday said Thursday.

In his presentation, Dr. Holliday discussed some places the state could look to bring in new revenue for education. He mentioned increased sales and utility taxes as well as expanded gaming.

Last year, the Monticello school district board voted to merge with Wayne County Schools after they said they didn't have enough money to go on.
