FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - Franklin County Sheriff's Deputies made two arrests after finding what they call an elaborate marijuana growing operation.
A Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy received a call from Dispatch advising him of a reckless driver in the area of Creekside Lane.
A vehicle matching that description was found parked at 200 Creekside Lane. The deputy detected a strong order of marijuana coming from the house when he approached.
Upon further investigation, the deputy discovered an active marijuana grow operation in the home's basement.
Now, one room is filled with marijuana, equipment to grow it, and other drug paraphernalia all adding up to more than 100,000 dollars according to Sheriff Pat Melton.
"He had a real good exhaust system. He had a thermostat inside the grow room to regulate the temperature and then the fans would kick on automatically and everything was on timers. So this wasn't just your average indoor grow," said Sheriff Melton.
Two suspects were arrested. 38-year-old Kevin Barnett is charged with cultivating marijuana and trafficking 39 pounds of marijuana.
"He knew what he was doing and had been doing this awhile," said Sheriff Melton.
Also, 18-year-old William Barnett is charged with cultivating marijuana.
Both were lodged in the Franklin County Regional Jail.
Sheriff Melton says he is proud of this bust knowing they got more marijuana, which he calls a gateway drug, off the streets.
"At the end of the day, marijuana is illegal in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and this is a win for us," said Sheriff Melton. "It's a win for the good guys."
