ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky (WKYT) - YAHTZEE!!! John Hardin 5-star lineman Matt Elam has chosen Kentucky over Alabama to play college football. Elam making the decision by wearing a UK helmet at his press conference. Elam said he told Coach Stoops two days ago and told Drew Barker yesterday he was picking Alabama, joking with the future UK quarterback.
Elam's choice of Kentucky gives the Wildcats 28 commitments for 2014. Elam says it was a "60-40 chance" he'd have committed to UK on his originally scheduled date. The 6-foot-5 lineman recently tipped the scales at 380 pounds! UK says his future playing weight would be ideal around 350. Elam is considered the No. 3 player in the country at his position.
Since coming to Kentucky, Mark Stoops made Elam one of his top priorities, sending hundreds of letters to the 5-star defensive lineman. The attention Elam gave UK in return was impressive, making a dozen unofficial visits to the Kentucky campus. Elam said he really couldn't have seen himself committing to Kentucky prior to Stoops' arrival. Elam says his recruitment is over, "My heart is at the University of Kentucky."
