Elderly woman dies in Letcher County house fire

THORNTON, Ky. (WYMT/WKYT) - There has been another death following a house fire in Eastern Kentucky.

It happened Friday afternoon in Letcher County.

Fire officials say 73 year old Virginia Lowe of Thornton was trapped inside her home.

The fire broke out around four o'clock.

“When we arrived the fire was fully engulfed. It was coming out the back of the house and had just started out the front of the house,” said Mayking Fire Chief, Tony Fugate.

Home owner Virginia Lowe was trapped inside.

A cousin and neighbor says he ran into the home when he noticed the smoke coming from the windows.

“When we open the door through the smoke we seen one of her feet right there, like she was trying to get to the door but she just fell straight backwards,” said Charles Adams.

Officials say that the fire started in the back of the house and that it grew so quickly that there was too much smoke for Lowe to get out fast enough.

Neighbors and family members took her across the street and began CPR until an ambulance arrived.

She was taken to Whitesburg Appalachian Regional Hospital but could not be saved.

“I just wish I could have gotten to her sooner and gotten out of there before the smoke got to her,” said Adams.

Officials say the cause of the fire is still not known.

We are told Lowe was living with her son and granddaughter.

Her son got to the home just as she was pulled out of the house.
