ESTILL COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Emergency crews say someone found an elderly woman's body inside a cistern in Estill County about 10 miles south of Irvine.
Investigators say her body was found around 7 p.m. Monday at her home on Sarvice Hollow Road, south of Irvine.
Police say the woman's daughter found her body in the cistern. Family members had come to the home to check on her because they hadn't heard from her since Sunday morning.
Kentucky State Police say the cistern the 90-year-old woman fell in is located in her home with a 20 inch by 20 inch opening that is 7 to 8 feet deep.
Police say currently this is a death investigation into an accidental drowning. They say she drowned in a foot and half of water.
Neighbors and friends of the family say the elderly woman lived on Sarvice Hollow Road for at least 30 years.
Her body was removed just after 10 p.m. Monday. Officials tell us she had no apparent medical conditions. Right now it is unclear how long the woman had been in the cistern.
Police tell us the woman's body has been taken to Toler Funeral Home in Irvine. Her name has not yet been released.
