LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT)-For members of the Fraternal Order of Police, it's the most wonderful time of the year. But as they drum up donations for their "Shop with a Cop" program, they say they may have taught the public a little too well when it comes to scams.

"We give about 200 children a Christmas who wouldn't normally have one," explained FOP President Mike Sweeney.

But after someone tried to used the guise of the Fraternal Order of Police to scam people last spring, Mike Sweeney says getting cash donations for the "Shop with a Cop" program is proving to be much harder this year.

"We taught the public to be careful and be concerned---particularly this time of year--there are people who take advantage of it," Sweeney said. "We just want to get it out there that we are soliciting and it's a great cause."

Solicitors have been calling folks since August and Sweeny says legitimate calls will always have the FOP on caller ID. He says if folks have questions, to call the police department at 859-258-3600.

"We really appreciate the support of the public."

The "Shop with a Cop" is scheduled for December 18th. Donations will be accepted until that day.
