Families still hurting after tornado hits Laurel County

EAST BERNSTADT, Ky. (WKYT) - One year after the March 2, 2012 tornado outbreak, families continue to recover from the emotional scars of what happened.

Connie Simpson lost her mother and sister when the tornado ripped through East Bernstadt. Simpson's mother, Ethel Pruitt. and sister, Mary Ann, lived in a mobile home just off Interstate 75 in Laurel County.

Pruitt's mobile home disappeared. Pieces were found 200 yards away. Her body was found underneath. Mary Ann died of her injuries three weeks later. Simpson says she stills fell guilty she wasn't with them.

Pruitt's next door neighbor has rebuilt. The family survived by hiding in a truck parked in the garage. The woman who survived was too upset to talk to us on camera.

Life has changed in other ways, a year later. The threat of storms or dark clouds brings anxiety, even fear to some.
