LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A father is lodged in the Fayette County Detention Center waiting to be arraigned on a manslaughter charge in the death of his two-month-old daughter.
Emergency crews were called to a home on Huntsville Road around 6:30 Saturday morning for reports of an unresponsive child.
Investigators say William McKenzie, 30, admitted to wrapping a blanket around two-month-old Ava Grace McKenzie's face, which hindered her breathing. He told investigators, the mother of the child had warned him before that wrapping the blanket the way he did could suffocate the baby. Police say the child died at UK Hospital.
WKYT's Whitney Wetzel spoke with a friend of family. He says he’s known them for years and never would have expected this to happen.
"It's sad that a father would lose a child, or that anybody would lose a child," says Mack Hurt Jr., a friend of William McKenzie. "I know he wasn't one that wanted to lose his and his girlfriend [didn't want to] either. It's just a sad tragedy that happened there."
McKenzie's arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday.
