Farm to become new home for a Lexington shopping center

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Developers hope it will become a new 'summit' for central Kentucky shoppers. A new outdoor shopping center is now in the works for Lexington.

As we first told you at six, Bayer Properties wants to build what's being called The Summit Lexington on land at the intersection of Nicholasville Road and Man o' War.

Right now it's a farm that's been in one family's hands since the Revolutionary War.

The Fritz Farm has evolved over the years, but a barn there built in 1892 still stands.

It's all located at one of the busiest intersections in Lexington.

"You don't hear sirens like this too much around farming, but we've gotten used to that after time," said John R. Fritz, Jr. who owns the land and farm.

Fritz tells us he saw the new transformation coming from a country mile away. Man o' War was constructed right in the middle of the family's farm years ago.

"I think this is a shopping district with Fayette Mall and everything around and across the way," said Fritz.

The property started shrinking in on the family with developments over the years with housing and new roadways. But Fritz says the changes are not all bad, just bittersweet.

"It's one of those things that we don't really want to, but we know we're gonna have to," said Fritz. "It's tough, but that's where we're at."

Fritz says he knows you can't stop progress and that this new shopping center is a part of moving the area forward. But he can't help but think about how weird it will be once his home is gone and the farm is covered with black top.

"It's gonna be odd to drive by here to not see the house and things," said Fritz.

He says his family will probably buy land between Lexington and Nicholasville because relocating is the next step.

"Farming is in your blood. And it's probably a pretty good investment to put your money in," said Fritz. "They quit making land a long time ago, so we'll probably just buy some land and go from there."

We are told the project will cost between 85 and 100 million dollars. The Summit Lexington shopping center is expected to be done in the fall of 2015.
