Father home from service surprises children at Pulaski Elementary

Somerset, Ky. (WKYT) - A brother and sister at Pulaski Elementary had no idea what was about to take place. Jeff Ward had just returned from his service in Afghanistan, and job one, was seeing his kids.

“We’re in a pretty bad place, their mom lets me see them on Skype…that helped me through the entire year,” said Ward who has served 4 deployments with the Air Force National Guard.

Ward hadn’t seen his daughter, Abby, or son, Micah since January. He didn’t think he was going to see them until next year.

He was among several sent home early.

And on Tuesday, he surprised the two at their school and it just happened to be his daughter’s 10th birthday.

And dozens of others got to witness the joyous homecoming between father and son and daughter.

“And they have really missed him. So for the school to be a part of that, to experience that is quite an honor,” said Pulaski Elementary Principal Angela Wilson.

“He loves me so much and cares about me so much. And will do anything for me,” said Abby, who is in the 4th grade. Her brother, Micah, is in the 3rd grade.

Sometimes the best birthday presents are those that don’t come wrapped with ribbons and bows.

“The best birthday present ever,” said Abby.

Micah says he looks forward to playing video games with his dad.

The good news is that Ward won’t have to leave home any time soon.
