Fire Department: check your generators now before the weather hits

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - From salt to shovels, everyone is getting ready for the icy blast that's Bluegrass bound.

"I've already had some customers come in asking for some rock salt, some ice melt, and things to prepare their roads, driveways, areas along their house. Also, some emergency situation type items such as flashlights," explained Michael Brogle, Assistant Store Manager at Lowes in Lexington.

Brogle said the items are stocked and ready for sale, including hot commodities like generators.

"Usually quite a bit of demand on those."

Speaking of generators, the fire department offers this advice: test it now before the bad weather hits.

"Try to do some preventive maintenance on them and go out and make sure they work prior to any type of bad weather coming in," instructed Captain Lee Hayden of the Lexington Fire Department.

Each year Hayden said fire crews respond to several calls of problems with portable generators and many of them could be avoided.

"Oil levels, make sure they're filled to the proper level," he said, "then have extra fuel on hand, in case inclement weather does come in and they have to use it."

Most importantly, Captain Hayden instructed to always keep the generator running outside of the home because of the fumes. So, make your check list of any emergency items you need from water to food to fuel and be ready.

As Fayette County Emergency Management Director Pat Dugger said, "Just prepare to have a nice weekend at home."

Because winter is coming and you don't want to be caught in the cold.
