LEXINGTON, Ky (WKYT) - Lexington Fire crews have been at the old location of the Stop 'N' Shop on West High Street since shortly after 3:00pm Friday when a fire damaged the building.
One side of the suffered heavy damage in the fire and there was smoke and water damage throughout. Crews did have the fire under control within about 20 minutes of their arrival.
Fire investigators say their earliest findings are that the fire was arson.
The building used to be the Stop 'N' Shop convenience store, but the owners of that business say they relocated in November to Seventh Street so the building was empty. The people who ran the store say there was no electricity on for the building, which they say was recently purchased by the state.
One lane of Versailles Road was closed while crews worked to put out the fire. A portion of Pine Street was also closed. Both roads are now clear.
Firefighters say the building was already scheduled to be demolished as part of a state road project, but they do ask that anyone in that area around 3:00pm who may have seen something give them a call.
