DANVILLE, Ky (WKYT) - A couple on vacation fell victim to a burglary early Saturday morning. Now police say they may also be victims of arson.
Neighbors saw smoke pouring out of the garage of the home on Cheryl Lane. Firefighters were there within minutes.
The fire was so intense smoke from it stained the glass of every window in the home but firefighters were able to extinguish the flames.
Once the fire was out police began an investigation. They say while the family was out of town someone had been inside the house.
"When the fire department was on scene checking the structure they found an unsecured door at the rear of the residence that appeared to have been forced," said Danville Police Sgt. Glen Doan.
That break-in through the back wasn't the only evidence left behind.
"Outside of the residence were some electronics along with some collectibles that had been bagged up and were outside in the yard like they had been dropped," Sgt. Doan said.
The people who live in the home were in Tennessee visiting relatives but they came back as soon as they heard about the fire.
While they go through their home to see what they can save, Danville Fire investigators are going through evidence to see if they can find the cause of the fire.
The homeowners say they lost one of their cats that normally lives outside. It somehow got in the home during the fire and didn't make it out.
