A birthday celebration turned tragic for two Russell Springs families when a fire claimed two children's lives.
It happened before 10 p.m. Saturday on Short Street when the fire chief says the fuse box in the back bedroom probably caught on fire.
That's the room four-year-old Heiden Oseguera and four-year-old Hector Curry were playing in when flames soon surrounded them.
"Nothing we can really do about it. We busted windows out in the back. But it was too late already," said Sergio Montanez, a neighbor who tried to help.
The families told officials they tried to get the boys out, even neighbors helped busting out windows and spraying hoses, but it was too late.
"It just takes a very short amount of time for something to happen and for it to be too late," said Russell County Deputy Coroner Troy Harris.
Deputy Coroner Harris says it's one of the worst cases he has dealt with.
"The little boys were just so precious. And I just felt so sorry for the family. There's nothing you can say to take the pain away," said Deputy Coroner Harris.
The two bodies were sent to Frankfort for autopsies.
