Fire forces UK students from home

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Some University of Kentucky students are out of their apartments after a fire.

Firefighters were called to the home on University Avenue near UK's campus at around 12:15 p.m. Friday. Crews arrived to find smoke and flames visible form the top of the home.

Firefighters tell WKYT this fire was a tough one to contain.

"The fire gave us a little bit of a problem. If you notice the building is split into at least two apartments. So we have some void spaces. Once we got the entire body of the fire knocked down. It was just chasing down the little fires that get down in those void spaces," says Battalion Chief Jeff Nantz.

One person was in the downstairs apartment when the fire started. That person was able to escape.

Both apartments suffered heavy damage.
