Firefighters give away thousands of toys

Updated: Sat 11:12 PM, Dec 15, 2012

Thousands of toys filled a Lexington warehouse Saturday morning, each one waiting to be snatched up. But just days ago the Fraternal Order of Firefighters needed help if they were going to help Santa.

"We were a little tight about a week ago," said John Durr, president of the Lexington chapter.

Luckily some local businesses stepped up, and now these parents are stepping away with presents.

"It's a joy, it's a relief, it's a blessing honestly," said Tammara Ritter who was getting toys for her four-year-old son.

"I've been doing this for 18 years and I can honestly say I think it's the best ever," Durr said.

The mood during the shopping was one of joy and thanks, as volunteers filled bags and parents fulfilled Christmas wishes. Each parent was given tickets they could exchange for toys, games, and even bicycles.

"We had several families crying today just because they've been glad because this is their only Christmas," Durr said.

If there are any toys left over once the program is finished organizers will work with other local agencies to get them to people who need them. They say every toy they have will end up in the hands of a child.

"Excited, I can't wait to see his face,"Ritter said.
