Firefighters battle more than just flames

Updated: Sun 6:17 PM, Jul 01, 2012

Firefighters had to battle more than just flames this evening as they tried to save a house.

A fire broke out just after 6:00 PM off Overview Drive in Lexington. Crews had to come up with ways to stay cool while putting out the flames.
"It's tough on these guys," explains Lexington Fire Department Battalion Chief Brian Wainscott, "you have a job to do but you also have to figure out a way to make sure your guys stay cool and out of harms way."

Temperatures broke 100 degrees today for the third day in a row. "It's been a rough stretch on everyone, we're not use to it being this hot so soon."

A LexTran bus was on site for firefighters to go sit in to stay cool and bottled water was provided for those on scene. "To make sure we do our job well we need to make sure everyone is hydrated and healthy. Uur guys drink a lot of water and stay cool by switching off with other crew members so everyone gets a break."

No one was inside during the fire. The cause is still being investigated.
